Reni Lane is a shape-shifter in the best sense: a pop singer with soulful instinct, classically trained multi-instrumentalist with the heart of a punk, and composer with the mind of a filmmaker.

Now based in a French countryside chateau where she produces and stars in her own YouTube series, Lane moves fluidly between worlds: gracing major festival stages as the keyboardist for UK rock band Razorlight, fronting her own Franco-American rock group Lick the Star, and creating solo work that defies genre. But her story began in dorm-room DIY shows that drew blogosphere buzz, comparisons to Annie Lenox, and the attention of legendary producer Linda Perry. A major-label deal with Universal Motown followed—then collapsed—but Lane refused to fade. What could have been the end became the start of a more fascinating story: Lane evolving into a true renaissance artist. It was a gifted thrift store keyboard that set the tone: as a child, Lane lost herself in the sweeping soundscapes of John Willians and Hans Zimmer, composing her own cinematic pieces on borrowed instruments before she was a teenager. After a move from Oregon to Virginia, she threw herself into every outlet available - school jazz band, theater, even the local university’s orchestra - eventually winning a national music award at age 14 and graduating early to make the leap to New York City.In the downtown anti-folk scene, at weekly Sidewalk Café performances, Lane honed a voice that drew comparisons to Suzanne Vega and The Cardigans. Her debut indie album American Baby—written while juggling creative writing courses at Columbia University—led to collaborations with David Poe and Joseph Arthur, plus tours across Europe that planted her name abroad. Concerts hosted in Lane’s own dorm room and quirky music videos spread online, catching the eyes of Nylon, the New York Post, and eventually VH1, who crowned her one of their up-and-coming “First Ladies of Rock.”Soon after, Linda Perry and Universal Motown came calling. Lane’s 2010 major label debut Ready promised a breakthrough, with songs placed in The L Word and Secrets of Aspen. But the glossy corporate machine didn’t deliver as hoped: when the label eventually pulled the plug, Lane was devastated, but she shed the skin and kept moving. She briefly joined LA buzz band The Like opening on tour with Arctic Monkeys before moving on to co-found the synth-pop duo Fever High with Anna Nordeen and the late Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy), releasing a full-length album and several EPs through Sire Records. Her musical handiwork appeared in films like the Emmy-winning The Sentence and Diary of a Teenage Girl, and she became the go-to sideman for acts like Duncan Sheik, Howie Day, and Oracle Sisters. In 2018, she made the move to Europe, joining Britpop band Razorlight as their keyboardist, becoming a full-time member and appearing in their videos, live broadcasts, and reunion documentary Fall to Pieces. But at the core of Reni Lane’s ever-shifting career is a solo catalog that remains her deepest well: raw, disarmingly self-aware, and a little bit rebellious. Though her influences span from Neil Young to Bjork and PJ Harvey, what defines Lane is her emotional intelligence: drawing from decades of self-invention, Lane’s music shimmers with nostalgia without getting stuck in it.Tracks like “Love Too Soon,” “Detour,” and “Avenue B” balance pop structure and lush, dreamlike production while exploring emotionally grounded themes: quiet revolutions, the pull of old habits, and the bittersweet ache of outgrowing former selves. There’s wit, too—what she jokingly calls “music to inspire you to go back to therapy”—but what she offers is something richer: the soundtrack to becoming who you actually are.An auteur at heart, Lane often conceives, styles, and produces her own videos—crafting retro-inspired costumes, inhabiting surreal landscapes and channeling an androgynous glam-rock energy. Her multi-disciplinary approach is less about polish than presence: living fully inside her ideas, she invites her listeners to do the same.In 2024 that instinct led her to move to an 19th-century estate in rural France, where she now directs and co-stars in Oh No Another Chateau, a cult-hit YouTube series documenting her life renovating a crumbling chateau into an artist’s refuge (with the help of partner and architect Gustavo Nogueira). What began as a side project has attracted a global following drawn to its mix of humour, education, and the offbeat rhythms of a creative life. Now finding success as a chateau creator, Lane is channeling this new chapter into her next body of solo work—songs shaped by the slow cycles of nature and the fierce joy of restoring something that’s been forgotten. The new music arrives this fall.
